Now that we are living in post GDPR times and the panic has subsided, here at North London IT Support reflect on what GDPR means in terms of IT.
There appears to be a lot of confusion around what is to be expected of small businesses in terms of GDPR. Like many others, we have been inundated by companies asking us to read their updated privacy policies, resubscribe/unsubscribe/confirm that we wish to continue receiving newsletters and much much more.
If you send out newsletters, you may wish to ask those on your mailing list if they want to stay on there. You don’t strictly have to do this but just make sure your communications with your mailing lists are clear.
We find this article from Econsultancy a real eye-opener on the variety of repermissioning email examples, some good and some bad.
Registering on Information Commission Website
We had read somewhere that all businesses had to be registered with the Information Commission (ICO) but upon further inspection it turns out you don’t. Take this small self-assessment questionnaire to find out if you need to.
In the run up to May 25th, we have had so many enquiries and requests for data-encryption. However, according to ICAEW, the phrase “encryption” only turns up four times in the 88 page GDPR document.
The problem is that GDPR requires a risk-based approach to compliance. This means that companies need to demonstrate an understanding of what is needed to keep client data safe. If they don’t use encryption then they would need an alternative way of safe-guarding personal data.
If you choose not to use data encryption, do make sure that your important information is at least passworded. We have created a guide on how to choose a password, best practice in changing your password and password storage devices.
