Does your office wi-fi always work or do you have blackspots in your office? We’ve recently been boosting wi-fi in offices where blackspots exist and installing wi-fi to new parts of offices where it did not previously exist.
Follow our tips to combat wi-fi signal blackspots.
Change the channel number
If your connection is slow or poor then you can change the channel number. There are 11 to choose from, and chances are that yours is still on the one it was set up with. By changing channel you will be able to find one with less interference or users. Follow this guide by Tech Advisor to change your channel manually.
Moving the router to a higher point within your building
As demonstrated in this video, wi-fi signals are better when routers are placed up higher. If there is a specific room (in this video they used garage) where the wi-fi signal needs to reach, try to place the router as close to this room as possible. The signal will be stronger if it only needs to travel through two walls rather than four.
Other helpful tips include not putting the router near a microwave or other metal objects as this will interfere with the signal. Signals also can’t travel through water so don’t put it near the fish tank!
Direct your wi-fi signal
Did you know that you can direct your wi-fi signal to where you want it (and away from your neighbours where you might not want it). Using aluminium foil or a metal drink can helps direct the signal. Xia Zhou, an assistant professor of computer science at Dartmouth, and the senior scientist is behind the new research. Boosters, Extenders and Repeaters – What’s the difference?
They are pretty much the same thing although do work in slightly different ways. All you need to know is that a repeater contains two wireless routers and one of these picks up the existing wi-fi network and then transfers it to the other wireless router, transmitting the boosted signal. Find out what might be best for you in this Repeater Store article.
Change your router
The simple solution is to check that you have the best router that you can afford. Tech Advisor have done the hard work for us and have reviewed the best routers for 2018. Take a look and find one that suits your situation.
If this all seems a bit daunting then perhaps you need an IT company, like North London IT Support to come and take a look!
